5 Dog Languages Every Dog Parent Should Know
Dogs peeing and pooping at the same time, is that wired or a coincidence?
It’s rarely hard ever to see such kinds of behaviors in dogs. I’ve experienced this with my loving pooches a handful of times, but not much.
Since I’m a huge dog person and run this website, I’ve heard so many such stories from many different dog owners over the course of the last decade or so.
It seems hilarious when your dog lifts its leg up to pee on a bush and suddenly starts pooping. Some owners claim that dogs are smart enough to kill two birds with one stone.
However, it doesn’t necessarily be efficient because a dog might poop and pee separately when they are in a rush for something.
Since there is no such specific pattern for this strange behavior, it’s best to examine the possible reasons for this unusual trait.
Why do some dogs pee & poop at the same time?
A dog might be doing these two businesses at the same time due to a handful of reasons. However, we’ve identified 6 common causes and hope it will make sense for you.
1. The dog isn’t being given enough time to go outdoors.
A well house-trained dog will never attempt to pee or poop indoors. It will wait until the dog parents recognize its urgency.
You know what? When someone regularly engages in a specific activity with his dog, It becomes a "learned behavior" for the dog. For instance, if you used to offer a puppy treat to your dog whenever you return home in the evening, the dog is waiting for that rewardable incident to happen. So, that becomes a learned behavior.
If the dog isn’t given enough time to go outside in the morning, he will be quick to complete all the tasks at once as a result of not allowing spend enough time.
When this happens regularly, it will become a learned behavior over time, resulting in the dog will pee and poop at the same time.
It’s better to extend the time you used to allow him in order to address the issue.
2. Different sensory receptors.
The next thing we wanna realize is that dogs have different dedicated sensory receptors to trigger urinating and defecating processes.
So, a dog might not even realize it has to be pee while he defecates.
When sensory receptors stimulate the need to urinate and defecate at the same time, the dog does so simultaneously. If that’s the case, there is nothing to worry about.
Here is why some dogs poop on the couch.
Many elderly dogs become incontinent without showing any other signs of illness.
With regards to urinary incontinence, here, the dog loses control of its bladder.
If the dog sufferers from incontinence, it’s a no-brainer that the dog will pee while pooping due to a lack of control of its bladder.
I would like to suggest chatting with your vet regarding this situation. Moreover, incontinence is another reason why do some dogs urinates themselves.
When a dog is super excited about something, it might poop while lifting its leg up to pee.
There is nothing to worry about, they do it because out of super enthusiasm for doing something or because of an exciting event that is about to happen.
5. Due to hurry
Usually, dogs would love to find separate places to poop and pee. However, when the dog cannot hold both of them long enough to explore and find different places, it will poop and pee simultaneously.
This can be prevented by moving the dog to a comfortable area, such as a bush, so, no need to bother looking for places.
6. Some sled dogs do this.
Sled breeds including Siberian husky, Alaskan Malamute, Samoyed tend to poop and pee simultaneously while running. But there is not much clear explanation for this. (If you know, consider sharing it with us in the comments section.)
Should you worry if your dog pee & poop simultaneously?
If you have gone through all the above reasons for this matter, you can realize that both normal and abnormal reasons could influence this behavior.
But, the causes are more inclined toward pretty much normal reasons.
However, in terms of abnormal circumstances, including incontinence, giving a lack of time to spend outdoors will definitely impact the dog's health. But, apart from a few of the abnormal conditions, there is nothing to worry about when a dog poops and pee at the same time. It's better to chat with your veterinarian in both normal and abnormal circumstances.
How to train your dog to pee and poop at the same trip?
There are certain movements where you need to train our dogs to do all of their business at once due to our lack of time. I mean, anyone can tell to spend more time with your dog.
But, what to do when you don’t have that much time and energy? Because you have a family to care for and a job with a significant amount of workload.
Moreover, if you live in an apartment building, you might find it difficult to go up and down more frequently when the dog wants to pee and poop.
So, it’s better to train the dog to pee and poop on the same trip.
Here, I’m gonna give you 4 step process to get that done.
Have a play/exercise time in the morning
Providing good exercises or having some playtime is beneficial for both you and the dog in many ways. It’s a nice way to activate your brain and the body for the day.
Regarding the dog’s needs and our target, playing with your dog fetch, having a good walk session, something the similar game could help the dog get the bowels moving, resulting in the dog feeling to pee and poop at one trip.
2. Training command to pee and poop on the same trip.
Training a dog to eliminate a specific command is something you can work on to do this every day and save some time.
Of course, the dog doesn’t necessarily do pee and poop at once, you can train it to find separate places to complete both tasks on every morning trip outside.
Here is how you can do that.
3. Go to a doggy-comfortable area.
When you feel that the dog has an urgency of peeing or pooping like roaming, sniffing around, use the command and take the dog to a doggy-comfortable area, often bushy or full of grass.
If you live in an apartment, choose the area where other dogs do this because that scent also triggers their brain to do so.
4. Encouraging the behavior.
Encouraging this positive behavior (according to your needs and requirements) is a great way to continue this process regularly. For the praising, it’s best to use high-value treats with verbal encouragement.
However, praising twice just after peeing and pooping isn’t something appropriate, and the dog might learn to double-dip, frankly, get rewarded twice for doing their business (essentially the same thing).
Instead of that, hold that treating/praising movement until the dog completes both tasks.
Things to be aware of.
You seem to have enough knowledge about whether dogs pee and poop at once. But. There are certain things you wanna be aware of.
Commands: Use different commands for urinating and defecating, which makes sense for the dog. In fact, tell everyone in the household to use the same command to prevent unnecessary confusion.
Vet checkups: Don’t forget regular vet checkups. As we discussed earlier, a dog might pee and poop at the same time, even in abnormal circumstances. So, it’s recommended to consult a veterinarian to ensure the dog is completely okay.
Don’t yell: When a dog doesn’t wanna poop, it won’t do that, don’t yell at them. Because it needs to feel that. For instance, think about yourself.
Know the limits: Don’t think just like “the more dog gets exercise, the easier to pee and poop” there is no such thing. Don’t exceed its exercise requirements in order to do that.
Do female dogs pee while they poop?
In general, a female dog is less likely to pee and poop at the same time. If you go for a walk with your female dog, she might pee at a certain place, and after 100-150 feet, she might tend to poop.
However, when they really need to poop, female dogs will urinate a little bit in the first place, and then they will defecate.
